Survey of "Flashbulb" Memories
We are interested in collecting people's flashbulb memories. Flashbulb memories are slightly unusual as they are memories of our personal circumstances when we first learned of an item of public news. In other words we remember who we were with, what we were doing, where we were, and usually some other distinctive detail(s), when we first learned of a particular item of public news.
Of course, everyone will have different flashbulb memories and that is partly what we are interested in: just what are the sorts of events that give rise to the formation of these memories? Importantly everyone has at least a few flashbulb memories so please describe for the first one to come to mind for you in this survey.
On the next page a form is provided for you to record your flashbulb memory. There is, however, one strict rule: the memory you describe really must be a memory. It cannot be a family story, an image from a photograph, or something half remembered that you are not certain actually is a memory. Or, indeed, just a memory of an item of news. Instead, we want you to tell us about your personal circumstances, the who, what, where, when, and more, that you can recollect when you heard the news of a public event or occurrence.
Once you have described your memory you are then asked to provide a short set of ratings of various aspects of the memory, this should only take a few minutes and will be invaluable in helping us understand this important and fascinating set of memories.
